The role-swap audit
One week: your teen sets YOUR screen rules. Yes, really.
Nothing reveals your habits like a teenager with clipboard energy.
Feeling the enforcement seat — and letting your teen see you follow rules too.
Why it matters
A one-week game with a serious payload: your teen audits YOUR phone habits and sets you three rules — and you actually follow them. The tool structures it so it doesn't dissolve into gotchas: the teen observes for two days, picks three specific rules from a menu (no phone at dinner, no scrolling during conversations, phone out of the bedroom), and runs a nightly thirty-second check-in where you get a score. Teens take this job hilariously seriously, and two things happen: you discover your habits are worse than you thought, and your teen experiences the enforcement seat — including how it feels when you negotiate, sneak, and special-plead. The week ends with one question at dinner: 'what should BOTH of us change?'

Key points
- Three specific rules, picked by the teen, followed by you.
- Take the nightly score with grace — that's the lesson, live.
- End with: what should BOTH of us change?
The science
Role-reversal is an established perspective-taking intervention: occupying the rule-setter's seat builds understanding of the position faster than any explanation of it. The parent-modeling literature does double duty here — your visible effort at your own rules is the strongest credibility signal a teen receives about the family's screen values. Reciprocity transforms the rule relationship: systems experienced as mutual get categorically more buy-in than systems experienced as imposed downward. And the comedy is functional — shared laughter during the audit lowers defensiveness on both sides, which is what lets the final what-should-we-both-change conversation actually land.
