What's happening.

Your 15-year-old: “The bookstore offered me 3:30-7 Mon, Wed, Fri. $14 an hour. I want to take it.” You note the timing.

What we usually say — and why it backfires.

Parent

That's too many hours. Your grades will suffer.

Teen

I have a 3.7. I can handle 12 hours a week.

Parent

Trust me, you can't. Tell them no.

Teen

(takes the job without telling you, you find out from a friend's mom 2 months later)

  • “Trust me, you can't” at 15 with a 3.7 isn't trustable — they're proving capacity.
  • Forcing them to refuse the job kills the work experience without solving the underlying parental worry.
  • Long-term: parents who refuse jobs because of theoretical grade risk produce adults who can't manage work-school balance because they never practiced.

The better version

What works — and why.

Parent

Let me think. 12 hours during school weeks IS a real load on top of homework and your activities. Counter-offer for the bookstore — could you do two shifts instead of three for the first month, see how it goes, and add the third if it's manageable? You'd be the one having that conversation with the manager.

Teen

...yeah I could ask. They might say no though.

Parent

Then we revisit. The principle is — work experience is valuable enough that I'd rather you find a workable version than no version. Three conditions if we go ahead — grades don't drop more than half a letter, you tell me when work is making you wreck on sleep, and you save 30% of every paycheck. Workable?

  • “12 hours IS a real load” validates the parental concern accurately without overruling.
  • Counter-offer (2 shifts then add the 3rd) is the negotiation move that respects the teen's capacity while building in a check.
  • “The principle is — work experience is valuable enough that I'd rather find a workable version than no version” names the long-term frame clearly.
